For over three decades, AVO has meant one thing to cigar smokers: Dominican Republic, full stop. So when word got around that AVO was finally making a cigar outside the D.R. for the first time in the brand’s history, we didn’t quite believe it — until we had a box in front of us at Entre Humos.
We do now. And after sitting with all three vitolas — Robusto, Toro, and Churchill — in the kind of tropical humidity that makes a cigar behave differently than it does anywhere else, we’ve got thoughts.
A Little History, Because It Matters Here
AVO wasn’t started by a tobacco family. It was started by a jazz pianist. Avo Uvezian spent decades composing and performing before he ever rolled a cigar, and that background shows up in every AVO blend since — balanced, deliberate, built the way a good song is built, with room for every note to breathe. When the Oettinger Davidoff Group took over the brand in 2013, they kept that philosophy intact. AVO Classic, AVO Signature, AVO Syncro — smooth has always been the house style.
That’s exactly what makes Expresivo a departure worth talking about. This is AVO’s first cigar ever made outside the Dominican Republic — built in Honduras, using Honduran and Nicaraguan tobacco, under an Ecuadorian wrapper. AVO went looking for more body, more spice, more of a statement. They found it, without losing the thing that made people love the brand in the first place.
What’s Actually in the Blend
- Wrapper: Ecuadorian
- Binder & filler: Honduran tobacco from the Jamastrán Valley, blended with Nicaraguan leaf from Jalapa
- Body: Medium to full — a real step up from AVO’s usual mellow register
- Vitolas: Robusto (5 x 52), Toro (6 x 54), Churchill (7 x 48)
The Jamastrán Valley tobacco is doing most of the heavy lifting — it’s known across Honduras for earthy, spicy backbone. The Jalapa leaf from just across the border in Nicaragua softens that with floral, almost sweet notes. That push and pull between “structured” and “elegant” is the whole point of Expresivo, and it’s what separates it from every other AVO on the shelf.
How It Actually Smokes
We lit the Robusto first — the most concentrated read of the blend, and the one most AVO regulars are going to reach for out of habit. Right away: dark chocolate and roasted nuts, an earthy depth that AVO Classic never really goes near. Halfway through, it eases into leather with a creaminess that’s unmistakably AVO — proof this is still the same house, just telling a bolder story. The finish brings baking spices and dried fruit, with a floral note that lingers longer than you’d expect from something this full-bodied.
The Churchill tells the same story slower. More time in the burn means more time for each layer to show up on its own terms — if you want to actually study this blend instead of just smoking it, the Churchill is the one to reach for on a Sunday afternoon with nowhere to be. The Toro splits the difference: full ring gauge, a faster burn than the Churchill, all the same character packed a little tighter.
Construction was clean across all three — even draw, sharp burn line, no touch-ups needed — which matters more on a brand-new blend than people give it credit for. Entre Humos rates it 92 points, and honestly, we think that’s fair.
AVO Expresivo vs. AVO Classic
If you’ve smoked AVO Classic, don’t expect Expresivo to feel like a bolder version of the same cigar — it’s a different conversation entirely. Classic is Dominican tobacco built for smoothness first. Expresivo is Honduran and Nicaraguan tobacco built for character first, with the AVO smoothness showing up in the construction and the midpoint of the smoke rather than the whole experience. Think of Classic as AVO’s greatest hit and Expresivo as the new material — same artist, different set.

- Aged dark rum — the caramel and oak echo the leather and dried fruit in the finish
- A dark roast coffee or espresso, if you’re lighting up earlier in the day
- A rye-forward bourbon, if it’s later and you want spice working on both ends
